In July 1987 the Royal Mint was authorised by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to issue new United Kingdom gold bullion coins. To commemorate the introduction of these prestigious coins named after the symbolic figure of Britannia, the Royal Mint issued a limited edition of 1oz coins struck to Proof standard.
