Elizabeth II (1952 -), Commonwealth Games, 1986, gold proof Two-Pounds, Sovereign and Half-Sovereign, obverse design by Raphael Maklouf, crowned head right, rev. the Two Pounds reverse shows a Scottish thistle and a laurel wreath superimposed on St Andrew's cross, designed by Norman Sillman, the Sovereign and Half-Sovereign reverses show the classic St George and dragon right, date in exergue, B.P. to upper right of exergue for designer Benedetto Pistrucci (S. PGS07). Brilliant mint state, in original red leatherette case with certificate No. 07025.
Issued to commemorate the XIII Commonwealth Games which were being held in Scotland in 1986, this is the first time that a legal tender commemorative coin had been issued in the United Kingdom to mark a sporting occasion.
