Elizabeth I Groat

Elizabeth I (1558-1603), silver Groat, first issue (1559-60), small crowned bust left, wire line and beaded inner circle, legend and outer beaded circle surrounding, initial mark lis both sides, ELIZABETH; D; G; ANG; FRA; Z; HIB; REGIN; rev. long cross fourchee over small quartered shield of arms, POSVI DEV; AD IVTORE M MEV: weight 1.65g (BCW Ls-3A/LS-e4; N.1986; S.2551/2551A). Unevenly toned, rim nick, light scratches behind bust, fine and rare with the small shield reverse.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse, "Elizabeth, by the grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland." and on the reverse as "I have made God my helper" a Psalm from the Bible.

Provenance:

Ex Richard Cyril Lockett, English part II, Glendining 11th October 1956, lot 2022, part with his ticket citing "Ex Abbott Collection."
