Elizabeth I gold Crown

Elizabeth I (1558-1603), gold Crown of Five Shillings, struck in 22 carat "crown" gold, ornate crowned bust in ruff left, crown breaks inner beaded circle, Latin legend surrounding, initial mark cypher (1600), O ELIZAB; D; G; ANG; FR; ET. HI; REGINA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, E to left, R to right, crown breaks inner beaded circle, Latin legend surrounding, initial mark cypher, O SCVTVM. FIDEI. PROTEGET. EA; weight 2.68g (Schneider 815; Brown & Comber 2, H22; North 2010; S.2536). Once cleaned, holed and plugged with associated light tooling and weakness, otherwise good very fine, very rare and priced accordingly.

The mint mark cypher depicted by O for the year 1600 was in issue from the 1st May 1600 till 20th May 1601. The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Elizabeth by the grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland" and on the reverse as "The shield of faith shall protect her."
