Elis, Olympia, silver Drachm, c. 245-210 BC.
Elis, Olympia, silver Drachm, c. 245-210 BC, Σ, eagle grasping hare in talons, rev. F-A Ω, thunderbolt, 4.42g, 7h (BCD-Olympia 259). Good very fine.
This silver drachm was struck at Olympia in Elis, in the western Peloponnese, around 245-210 BC. Olympia was one of the most important religious sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world and was the home of the Olympic Games, which were held in honour of Zeus. The coin's imagery is closely connected with the sanctuary and its principal deity, using powerful symbols associated with Zeus and divine authority. The obverse depicts an eagle grasping a hare in its talons, accompanied by the letter Σ. The eagle was the sacred bird of Zeus and was one of the most recognisable attributes of the god. The dramatic image of the eagle seizing its prey conveys strength, dominance and divine power, while also demonstrating the engraver's ability to capture movement within the limited space of the coin. On the reverse is a thunderbolt, another unmistakable symbol of Zeus. The inscription F-A Ω appears on either side, referring to Elis and the Eleans, the people responsible for the administration of the sanctuary at Olympia. The combination of the eagle and thunderbolt creates an especially direct connection with Zeus, making the religious identity of Olympia immediately apparent. Coins from Olympia are particularly interesting because they were not simply expressions of civic identity but were closely connected with one of the most famous sanctuaries in the Greek world. The sanctuary attracted visitors, athletes and religious pilgrims from across Greece, and its festivals gave Olympia an importance that extended far beyond the boundaries of Elis. This drachm therefore represents both the religious significance of Olympia and the enduring power of Zeus within Greek culture. Its compact but striking design captures the sacred character of the sanctuary through two of the god's most important symbols.
