Elagabalus, Silver Antoninianus, Restoration of Power.

Regular price £465
Regular price Sale price £465

Elagabalus (AD 218-222) (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus), silver Antoninianus, Rome, undated, IMP CAES M AVR ANTONINVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. VICTOR ANTONINI AVG, Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm, 4.96g, 12h (RIC V, II. 155). Good strike, on a broad flan, attractive old cabinet-tone, extremely fine.

RIC notes the reverse type celebrates the restoration of power to the 'Antonine' family, to which Elagabalus claimed to belong, after the interlude tenure of Macrinus and Diadumenian. If that is the case, and it seems likely, although the coin is undated it's tempting to assign this issue to the beginning of Elagabalus's reign.
