Edward VIII 1937 Sovereign 9 carat gold plated modern restrike

Edward VIII (January to December 1936), Modern Fantasy Sovereign sized pattern, dated 1937, struck in nine carat gold plated silver by the Great American Coin Company, bare head left, PM raised in field below, legend and toothed border surrounding, EDWARD VIII : D: G: BR: OMN: REX: F: D: ND: IMP:, rev. struck en medaille, St George slaying dragon with lance, date in exergue, PM to upper right, edge milled and with hall marks for nine carat gold at 6 o'clock area, diameter 20mm, weight 6.34g (Giordano FC48). Toned a crude rendition of what the Sovereign could have been, made for collectors not able to afford the million pound worth original genuine coin, good extremely fine.

These modern nine carat gold plated fantasy pieces are not official coinage in anyway shape or form and is therefore hallmarked on the milled edge. Joseph Giordano lists this fantasy coin in his corpus on the coins and medals of Edward VIII "Portraits of a Prince" on page 652 as Fantasy Coin 48. As ownership of an original Royal Mint Edward VIII portrait coin is a privilege that few collectors can ever achieve, the production of "retro-patterns" in base metal or lower carat gold have always been popular with collectors as space fillers.
