These 9 carat gold fantasy pieces are not official coinage in anyway shape or form and is therefore hallmarked on the plain edge. Joseph Giordano lists this fantasy coin in his corpus on the coins and medals of Edward VIII "Portraits of a Prince" on page 649 as Fantasy Coin 43 originally produced as a retro pattern by the London Mint Ltd circa 2004. There was also pieces produced of Five Pounds, Two Pounds and Half-Sovereign size all in 9 carat gold. As ownership of an original Royal Mint Edward VIII portrait coin is a privilege that few collectors can ever achieve, the production of "retro-patterns" in base metal or lower carat gold have always been popular with collectors as space fillers.
