Edward VII 1905 Maundy Set with original Pass
Edward VII (1901-10), silver Maundy Set, 1905, bare head right, DES raised below for engraver G W De Saulles, legend and toothed border surrounding, EDWARDVS VII D: G: BRITT: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP: rev. crowned mark of value with date either side all within oak wreath (Bull 3611; ESC 2521; S.3985). Toned as struck and with accompanying entrance ticket for the Maundy Service at Westminster Abbey and a compliments slip from the Royal Almonry, an extremely rare occurrence of entry ticket and coin set.
The ticket is for entrance at the "Lantern" through Dean's Yard at Westminster Abbey at 12.30pm at the East Cloister Door on Maundy Thursday, 20th April 1905 for the service to start at 1pm. The ticket is issued by the Dean J Armitage Robinson and has a large brown letter E in the background presumably for East Cloister Door. There is also an embossed seal of the King with ship sailing left at the lower left of the ticket.
The compliments slip that no doubt accompanied this ticket in the post is from the Lord High Almoner at his office at 6 Craig's Court, Charing Cross.
The mintage for all four denominations for 1905 would produce 8,976 Maundy sets.
