Edward the Elder Portrait Penny, Gareard
Edward the Elder (899-924), silver Penny, portrait type, Moneyer Gareard, draped diademed bust left, Latin legend and linear circles surrounding, +EADVVEARD REX, rev. three cross pattees across centre, cross above at centre with tri-pellets either side, tri-pellet below at centre, Moneyer name in two lines, GARE / ARD MO, weight 1.59g (N.651; S.1084). Toned, rim a little chipped, weak at centre on face, otherwise very fine, a very rare moneyer.
Provenance:
The toning upon this coin looks similar to coins that have come from the Vatican Hoard sold at Glendining 1929-30.
