Edward III, silver Pre-Treaty Groat, series E, London, superb portrait

Edward III (1327-77), silver Groat of Fourpence, Pre-Treaty period (1351-61), London Mint, series E (1354-55), facing crowned bust within double tressure of nine arcs, trefoil on each cusp including breast, beaded circles and legend surrounding, annulet stops, +EDWARD'o D'o G'o REX AIIGL'o Zo FRAIICo D hYB, rev. long cross pattee, tri-pellets in each inner angle, beaded circles and double concentric legends surrounding some letter disjointed, CIVI TAS LOII DOII inner legend, +POSVI oDEVmo A DIVTOR Emo mEV, weight 4.41g (N.1163; S.1567). Toned, well struck with a lovely portrait, good very fine.

The Latin abbreviated legend translates as "Edward, by the grace of God, King of England and France, Lord of Ireland" and on the reverse "I have made God my helper," a Psalm from the Bible, with "City of London" on the inner legend.
