Regular price Sale price £2,500

Edward III (1327-1377), gold Quarter-Noble of one shilling and eight pence, Tower Mint, fourth coinage (1351-61), Pre-Treaty period, series B (1351), initial mark cross pattee, quartered shield of arms in tressure of eight arcs, pellet below, trefoils on cusps, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding with annulet stops and retrograde N, EDWAR'o D'o G'o REXo ANGL oZo FRAN, rev. tiny E in central compartment of ornate cross with lis terminals, lion over trefoil in each angle, all within beaded and linear tressure of eight arcs, legend and beaded border surrounding with annulet stops and curule X with retrograde N, initial mark cross pattée, EXALTABITVRo INo GLORIAoo AI, note extra word at end of legend for "Amen", weight 1.83g (cf.Schneider 13; cf.Doubleday 25; N.1141; S.1495). A little blundered in the striking around legend and probably once a field find as residual dirt remains in devices and legend, weak at rim in parts and a little misshapen, otherwise very fine and very rare especially with extra "Amen" at end of reverse legend usually depicted as A of AN rather than AI.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Edward by the Grace of God, King of England," and on the reverse "He shall be exalted in glory, Amen" a Psalm from the Bible.

Provenance:

Ex Noonans auction 274, 7th June 2023, lot 132.
