Edward III Noble, Transitional Treaty period, Majesty grading Company MS60
Edward III (1327-77), gold Noble, Transitional Treaty period (1361-63), King standing in ship sailing right, with upright sword and quartered shield, unusual Latin legend beaded circles surrounding, double saltire stops both sides, E DWARDxx DEIxx GRAxx REXxx AnGLxx DnSxx hIBn'xZxx ACQ'x, rev. E at centre of ornamental cross with lis terminals, small annulet either side of top lis, crowns over lions in angles, fleur de lis by upper right lion, annulet at each angular corner of central compartment, all within a beaded and linear tressure, fleurs in spandrels, legend +IhC'x AVTEmxx TRAnCIEVISxx Pxx mEDIVmxx ILLORRxx IBAT, unbarred As, note V for second n in third word and double R at end of penultimate word (cf.Doubleday 166-168; cf.Schneider 55-57; N.1222 S.1499). Toned with obverse a little off-centre, some light surface marks and wear, a very unusual legend reading both sides with the Doubleday referenced coins having a similar obverse, has been slabbed and graded by Majesty Grading Company which prevents weight being recorded, as MS60.
MGC certification 11742- the label defines this transitional issue correctly as having the annulets at corners of central panel.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Edward by the Grace of God, King of England, Lord of Ireland and Aquitaine"; and on the reverse "But Jesus, passing through the midst of them, went His way" taken from the Bible.
This coin was struck in the transitional period after the signing of the Treaty of Bretigny when Edward III relaxed his claim to the French throne in the Latin titles upon the coinage.
It is unusual to read TRANCIEVS for TRANCIENS and to have HIBN for the Irish title when it is usually HIB and ACQ for Aquitaine when it is usually AQT.
