East Wiltshire Tribal Group, 1/4-Stater
East Wiltshire Tribal Group, "Dahlia Horse Left", pale gold ¼-Stater, c.55-45 BC, crossed corded wreaths, 'bear's paws' in each quarter, rev. triple-tailed horse left, dahlia above, rings around, cogwheel below, 11mm, 0.73g (ABC 2109, VA 232, BMC 537, S 48). Very fine/good very fine, very rare.
Said to be a prototype for the base gold East Wiltshire Vale of Pewsey 1/4-Stater (ABC 2107).
Rudd (ABC p. 107) cites Allen (1961) and Robinson (1977) suggesting that a distinct Ancient British tribe lived in the area specifically centred around the Vale of Pewsey, in East Wiltshire, literally walking distance from the most iconic prehistoric British monument, the world-famous Stone Henge. The name of the tribe and its and rulers are lost to history, but their coinage is known from a small number of pieces which are all very rare, or unique.
