Dorset 17th century Token, Sherborne, Farthing, 1669

17th Century Token, Dorset, Shereborne, Farthing, 1669, for the poor, large mitre, toothed outer border surrounding, rev. six lines commencing with pierced sexfoil with cinquefoil either side / SHERBORN / FARTHING / FOR. THE / POOR / 1669, weight 2.21g (Boyne 93; BW.155). Toned with some Verdigris on obverse, good very fine to almost extremely fine.

The religious imagery of the mitre only on obverse harks back perhaps to when Sherborne was an important bishopric from the 8th Century commencing with the first Bishop St Aldhelm until the last Bishop Herman who was chaplain to Edward the Confessor.

Ex B. A. Seaby Ltd, with their ticket dating to 1956 and priced at 7/6d.
