Minted shortly after his death in AD 54, this rare gold aureus was issued by his teenage stepson and successor, Nero, to honour the newly deified emperor. By placing the title DIVVS ("The Divine") on the coin, the Roman state officially recognized Claudius as a god, which was a brilliant political move for the sixteen year-old Nero. Emphasizing that his adoptive father had ascended to the heavens established Nero's own legitimacy as the divine son of a god, smoothing over a potentially chaotic transition of power and securing the loyalty of both the Roman army and the Praetorian Guard. While the obverse presented Claudius with divine honours and a laureate head the reverse showing Claudius riding in a sacred, slow moving divine chariot rather than a rushed military vehicle, the coin visually translated his transition from a mortal ruler into an immortal state god. It highlighted that the Senate officially sanctioned his deification, bridging any potential political gaps for the young Nero and wrapping the new regime in the heavy cloak of traditional Roman religion. Ultimately, this coin captures a pivotal handover of power, marking the end of Claudius's unexpected reign and the dramatic beginning of Nero's time on the throne.
The obverse legend DIVVS CLAVDIVS AVGVSTVS translates to "The Divine Claudius Augustus."
