Cyrenaica, time of Ophellas, Governor of Cyrenaica (322-308 BC), gold Stater, Cyrene, c. 322-313 BC, KYPANAION, Nike driving quadriga right, rev. POLIANQEUS, Zeus-Ammon standing left, 8.60g, 11-12h (BMC 118; SNG Cop 1210; Naville 45, 88d). Ex-mount and with surface marks, rare.

Ophellas, general in Alexander the Great's expeditionary forces, who commanded a trireme on the Indus. After Alexander's death he allied himself with Ptolemy who sent him to quell and conquer Cyrenaica. His adversary there, Thibron, is said to have stolen the contents of Alexander's treasury at Babylon, murdering the city's satrap, Harpalus, along the way. It's possible therefore that this series is struck from the gold of Alexander the Great's own treasure at Babylon, reimagined into the coinage of this rare, short-lived issue.
