Cyrenaica, Magas, King of Cyrenaica (c. 276-250), silver Didrachm, head of Carneius right, rev. BA-ΣI, silphium plant, apple branch in left field, 6.93g, 2h (BMC 260 = Pl. XXIV, 7 these dies, dated 308-277 BC). Good very fine.

Rare variety with BA-ΣI rather than KYPA.

The stepson of Ptolemy I, Magas was at first the Ptolemaic Governor of Cyrene. On Ptolemy's death, Magas rebelled against his maternal half-brother, Ptolemy II, until eventually declaring himself ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, king, of an independent Cyrene around 276 BC.

The mysterious silphium plant is said to have been cultivated in an area only 125 by 35 miles in size. It's now thought to be extinct but at the height of its production it was credited as a cure-all - coughs, colds, aches, pains, fever, indigestion - which was both an aphrodisiac and a contraceptive in one.
