Coronation Festivities at Rotterdam, 1689.

William and Mary (1688-94), Coronation Festivities at Rotterdam, 1689, unsigned Silver Medal, palm tree, in front the arms of the city with lion supporters, maritime scene behind rev. feast beneath triumphal arch through which trading ships can be seen, 31mm (MI i 378/55). Good very fine and rare.

According to MI a great feast took place "where the statue of Erasmus is erected" (which must be Grote Kerkplein, next to the Laurenskerk) and the medal was distributed amongst those who attended. The statue is depicted accurately though the triumphal arch was always perhaps allegorical.
