Corinth, silver Stater, c. 345-307 BC, Pegasus flying left, koppa below, rev. head of Athena, left, wearing Corinthian helmet, aegis behind, AP below truncation, 8.39g, 6h (Calciati, Pegasi 427). Well-centred, good very fine.

The field symbol here is the aegis. The aegis is a shield or protective animal skin worn by Athena and commonly associated with her in ancient art and literature. Bearing the gorgon's head, it was often depicted as metallic snake skin, with tassels of gold, or live snakes, at its edges, and burnished by the cyclopes in the forge of Hephaestus. It may have been the gift of Zeus, or skin Athena flayed from a giant foe, or she may have been equipped with it right from the day of her birth when she emerged, fully formed, from her father's forehead.
