Corinth, Silver Stater

Corinth (c. 555-515 B.C.), Silver Stater. Pegasos flying left, koppa below, rev. incuse square of swastika pattern, 7.73g. (Calciati, Pegasi, 18/1 (this obverse die); BCD -; Ravel 33). An elegant and exceptional example of this rare early issue, perfectly centred on a broad oval flan, some light porosity, toned, good very fine, an impressive coin.

Early Staters of Corinth are rarely encountered, and those that do occasionally appear are often either short of flan or have corroded and pitted surfaces. This piece presents an opportunity to acquire a well-centred example, struck on a broad flan and with a complete Pegasos. Stylistically the Pegasos, its wings raised in mid-flight with all four legs in motion, is a particularly energetic archaic interpretation of this mythical beast. Set upon a wide oval-shaped flan, the whole composition gives the impression of a considerable amount of movement.
