Claudius, Gold Aureus.
Claudius (AD 41-54), gold Aureus, Lugdunum (Lyon), AD 44-45, TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG P M TR P IIII, laureate head right, rev. IMPER RECEPT across upper section of wall, Claudius seated left, holding scepter, signum left, all within distyle building with crescent in pediment and flanked by crenelated walls with arched entries, set on crenelated wall with two arched entries, 7.68g, 10h (RIC I 25 [1984: Rome]; von Kaenel Type 21 (unlisted dies); Lyon 40 (unlisted dies); Calicó 361a; BMCRE 23; BN 43-4; Biaggi 206; Mazzini 43). Very fine.
Raised to the position of Emperor by the Praetorian Guard rather than the Senate, Claudius was careful to secure their ongoing support with the promise of funding. The reverse type IMPER RECEPT recalls the Praetorian Guards' protection of Claudius at their garrison immediately after the assassination of Caligula, and their subsequent defence of the new emperor's position. Aurei of this type were struck and used for several years to make payments to the guard, with the image reinforcing the terms of the agreement between them and the new Emperor of Rome.
