Charles II (1660-85), silver twopence, first hammered issue (1660-61), crowned bust left, Latin legend and outer toothed border surrounding both sides, initial mark crown obverse only, CAROLVS II. D. G MAG: B: FR ET. H. REX, rev. long cross fourchée over quartered shield of arms, reads .CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO, H Struck over a sideways H in CHRISTO, harp with 5 strings, weight 1.03g (Bull 275; ESC 2161; Robinson p.143: 2 (iv); N.2770; S.3310).Attractively toned, some slight weakness parts of legend and some doubling of strike, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as AU53, unusual and scarce.
NGC certification 6946209-005 - the unusual reverse variety is not highlighted in the label.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland"; and on the reverse "I reign under the auspice of Christ."
