Charles II (1660-85),silver Threepence, 1676, with 6 of date over 5, Groat obverse utilised in error with larger laureate and draped bust right in proportion to legends, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. three interlinked Cs, date either side of crown above, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX., weight 1.70g (Bull 654; Robinson -; ESC -; S.3386).Toned, with some flecking and wear to high points, good fine and extremely rare, the first we have handled for sale.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Charles the Second, by the Grace of God," and on reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

We note the total output of silver at the Mint in 1676 totalled £315,695.

We can only trace one other example in a sharper grade sold at Dix Noonan and Webb 15 years ago for £300 hammer. The coin seems to be halfway between the weight of a Threepence and Groat too.
