Charles II (1660-85),silver Penny, undated, first milled issue, crowned bust left, value I in field behind head, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS. II. D. G. M. B. F &. H. REX,rev. quartered shield of arms over cross fleury, initial mark crown, CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO. stop at end of legend, 4 strings to harp, all letter Hs with faint bar, weight 0.48g (Bull.589; ESC.2273; cf. Robinson p.144: 13; S.3389). Toned, reverse weakly struck at centre, otherwise extremely fine with an impressive portrait.
The Latin abbreviated legends translate as "Charles the Second, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland" and on the reverse "I reign under the auspice of Christ.
