Charles II Maundy set 1674, 4D with 7/6 and 4/ rotate 4, 1D inverted G

Charles II (1660-85), silver Maundy Set, 1674, Four, Three, Two and One Pence, each with laureate and draped bust right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. quantity of interlinked Cs per denomination, the Groat with emblems inside the Cs, date either side of crown above, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX. Groat with 7 over 6 and 4 over rotated 4 in date, Penny with inverted G in GRATIA (Bull 597; ESC 2370; S.3392). Toned very fine and rare.

1674 is the first full year for new Sub-Almoner William Holder, Sub-Dean of the Chapels Royal, quite appropriate as still today the duties of the Royal Maundy are associated with the Chapel Royal. The Lord High Almoner in his penultimate year was Humphrey Henchman the Bishop of London, who died in October 1675.
