Charles II 1684 Halfcrown, 4 over 3, ex Clarendon

Charles II (1660-85), silver Halfcrown, 1684, 4 struck over 3, fourth laureate and draped bust right, legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS . II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, interlinked pairs of Cs in angles, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, .MAG. BR.FRA. ET.HIB REX. weight 14.59g (Bull 499 R4; ESC 492 R4; S.3367). Steel grey uneven tone, weakly struck on obversd as per usual, reverse well struck, otherwise about very fine / good very fine and very rare.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the Second, by the grace of God," and on the reverse "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
