Charles II 1679 Halfcrown
Charles II (1660-85), silver Halfcrown, 1679, V over inverted V or A in DECVS variety, fourth laureate and draped bust right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, pairs of interlinked Cs in angles, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB REX. edge inscribed in raised letters, +.DECVS. ET. TVTAMEN. . ANNO. REGNI. TRICESIMO. PRIMO+ weight 15.06g (cf.Bull 488; cf.ESC 484A R3; S.3367). Toned, a little weakly struck in high points of hair, otherwise almost extremely fine, reverse extremely fine, rare.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the Second, by the grace of God," and on the reverse, "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland," additionally on the edge "An ornament and a safeguard, in the thirty first year of the reign," the regnal year being counted from the time of the death of Charles I his Father.
