The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the second by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
The total gold output for the calendar year 1679 amounted to £534,409 worth of Five Guineas, Two Guineas, Guineas and Half-Guineas, the second largest of this reign. A proportion of the gold output was provided by the Royal African company in this period but we note that there were no Half-Guineas issued from their gold dated 1679, whereas there are for 1678 and 1680, meaning the only half guinea dated 1679 is the non-elephant and castle issue.
