Charles II (1660-85), gold Guinea, 1679, fourth laureate head right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, four interlinked Cs at centre, date either side of top crown, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, .MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB REX., weight 8.34g (Schneider 446; Farey 0200; Bull EGC 267; MCE 80; S.3344). Toned, perhaps once cleaned as old faint tone patches evident near obverse rim in parts, some adjustment marks at tip of truncation other light nicks and marks, otherwise good fine to almost very fine.

For the calendar year of 1679 the Royal Mint produced £534,409 worth of gold coins in all four denominations, from Five Guinea to Half-Guinea. This was the highest gold output up to that time in this reign but was later beaten on two successive occasions including the year Charles II died.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the second by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
