Charles II (1660-85), silver Shilling, 1663, transposed shields on reverse, first laureate and draped bust right, legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS . II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, the Irish and Scottish shields transposed, interlinked pairs of Cs in angles, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, .MAG. BR.FRA. ET.HIB. REX., weight 5.81g (Bull 504 R3; ESC 1024 R3; S.3371). Toned, well struck with wear to high points, good fine for this rarity.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the Second by the Grace of God" and on the reverse "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
The first year of the modern milled shilling produced coins in great numbers but a small proportion of them had this reverse legend error where the engraver has placed the Scottish and Irish shields in wrongly opposing positions giving this error reverse for collectors to covet and enjoy.
