Charles I Shilling, Tower Mint Group F, bust type 3, CAROLVVS error in legend
Charles I (1625-49),silver Shilling, Tower mint, Group F, mintmark tun, smaller bust left, single arched crown, large value XII in field behind, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, initial mark tun (1636-38) both sides, note double V unusually in King's name, .CAROLVVS D; G; MAG; BRI; FRA; ET. HIB; REX.,rev. long cross fourchée over quartered shield of arms, .CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO, weight 5.77g (Sharp F3/1; Brooker 516; N.2229; S.2796). Toned, one small chip, otherwise a pleasing very fine despite a soft strike in some parts, most unusual with the double V in the King's name and does not seem to be the result of a double striking, but rather an error on the die.
We note the total output of silver for this mint mark from 14th February 1636 until 8th May 1638 amounted to £401,679 across all silver denominations. This error spelt die would likely be just one die amongst many with the correct spelling and therefore only a small fraction of the total output would demonstrate shillings with this error.
Provenance:
Ex B A Seaby Coin and Medal Bulletin, March 1967, item H1151 listed with error spelling at £10.
