Charles I (1625-49),gold Crown, Tower Mint, group D, fourth crowned bust left, value behind, initial mark crown (1635-36) both sides possibly over bell on reverse, beaded circles and legend surrounding, CAROLVS. D'. G'. MA'. BR'. FR'. ET. HI'. REX,rev.crowned quartered oval shield of arms, crowned C to left, crowned R to right, CVLTORES. SVI. DEVS. PROTEGIT, weight 2.31g (Schneider 246; Brooker 210; N.2185; S.2715).Lightly toned, a little uneven in shape with flan flaw in obverse field, with unusual shield shaped countermark with a raised letter S at top of obverse to left of mint mark, probably a mark of ownership, otherwise a bold very fine.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on obverse "Charles by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland," and on the reverse "God protects his worshippers." These gold coins are struck in 22 carat "crown" gold.

The original pyx trial records for this mint mark show an output of that £95,694 worth of 22 carat crown gold between 18th June 1635 and 14th February 1636.
