Charles I Exeter Crown error legend AU50 - Finest graded at NGC
Charles I (1625-49), silver Crown, Exeter Mint (1643-46), undated, AVSPCE error reading, armoured King on horseback left, crowned holding upright sword, with sash tied in bow at back, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, initial mark rose, :CAROLVS: D: G: MAG: BRI: FRA: ET: HI: REX, rev. oval quartered shield of arms with scroll garniture, initial mark rose, letter I omitted in second word of legend, CHRISTO. AVSPCE. REGNO. weight 27.21g (cf. Brooker 1011-2; N.2533; S.3055). Toned, with some light flan flaws and striations, a little weak on upper part of King, otherwise well struck for this usually weak issue with a good horse, otherwise good very fine, scarce, graded by NGC as AU50.
NGC Certification 6321963-001 (mislabelled by them as 'Truro') currently the finest graded at NGC as Exeter (or Truro). We note an example of Exeter and one of Truro graded one level finer at PCGS as of July 2022, the error spelling not noted by the grading services anyway.
The abbreviated obverse legend translates as "Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland." and on the reverse "I reign under the auspice of Christ."
It is interesting to note that John G Brooker did not have the error legend in his collection and at that time this variety was regarded as Truro Mint.
