Charles I 1646 Halfcrown, Newark, final scarcer date siege issue
Charles I (1625-49),silver Newark siege Halfcrown, 1646, Royal crown, C to left, R to right, denomination below in Roman numerals, beaded border both sides, rev.three line inscription and date, OBS: / NEWARK / 1646, weight 15.30g (Brooker 1222; Bull 688; N.2638; S.3140A).Toned, a few light marks otherwise a pleasing very fine, the scarcer latter date.
As the new year at that time did not commence till the 25thMarch, the 1646 dated coins could really only have been issued from the 25thMarch till the 6thMay maximum when Newark surrendered. Though issue of 1646 coins was probably for a slightly shorter time than this in reality, perhaps only for 40 days or less, a very short-lived final siege issue.
