Celtic Interest - D. Iunius Brutus Albinus., Silver Denarius, recalling Caesar's Military Activities in Gaul.
Roman Republican, D. Iunius Brutus Albinus., silver Denarius, Rome, 48 BC, head of Mars right, rev. ALBINVS BRVTI F, Celtic shields, Celtic trumpets crossed in saltire, 3.61g, 4h (Sydenham 941; Crawford 450/1a; RWB 1576; Sear Imperators 25). Fine.
The types used for this coinage recall the Gallic Wars, depicting Mars, god of war, and the Gaulish war trumpets and shields. During the Gallic Wars, Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus held a command in Julius Caesar's navy and excelled in the Battle of Morbihan off the coast of Brittany. Using poles and hooks, the Romans disabled the Veneti fleet's sails leaving their ships stranded and vulnerable to Roman boarding parties. During the Civil Wars Albinus excelled again, building a fleet from scratch at short notice and taking Massalia for Caesar. Nevertheless, like his namesake, he would in time become one of Caesar's assassins. Caught in the political melée that resulted, he ultimately fled to Macedonia only to be murdered en route by a Gallic chief.
