Carian Islands, Rhodes, Silver Tetradrachm
Carian Islands, Rhodes (c. 404-385 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm. Head of Helios facing, slightly inclined to the right, rev. POΔ-ION, rose, with a bud on right, an olive-sprig and Φ on left; all within an incuse square, 15.30g., 12h (D. Bérend, 'Les Tétradrachmes de Rhodes de la première période, 1er partie', SNR 51, 1972, 79 (this coin); Ashton 43, pl. 6.2; Prospero, lot 50 (this obverse die)). Extremely rare, only eight examples (including this piece) recorded by Ashton. Of outstanding style, one of the finest of this series, surfaces a little bright and some light traces of double-striking on reverse, otherwise struck in high relief and extremely fine, a beautiful coin.
The inspiration for the facing head coinage of Rhodes most likely comes from the contemporary facing heads of Arethusa engraved by the artist Kimon at Syracuse. This particular obverse die is one of the finest, the head of Helios being rendered to a high standard of artistry by a master engraver.
