Carausius (AD 286-293), Æ Antoninianus, London, IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust to right, rev. [PAX A]VG, Pax standing facing, head to left, holding olive branch and sceptre, F-O across fields, [M]L in exergue, 4.26g (RIC V ii 101). Strong very fine.

Carausius - renegade Roman military commander who successfully usurped power and declared himself emperor of Britain. It is because Carausius was cut off by Rome, and needed currency, that a Roman Mint of London was established. Without Carausius there would likely never have been one.
