Carausius, AE Antoninianus
Carausius (AD 286-293), Æ Antoninianus, London, IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. PAX AVG, Pax standing to left, holding branch and sceptre, B-E across fields, MLX[XI(?)] in exergue, 3.88g (RIC V ii, 101). Sharply struck, good very fine.
Carausius - renegade Roman military commander who successfully usurped power and declared himself emperor of Britain. It is because Carausius was cut off by Rome, and needed currency, that a Roman Mint of London was established. Without Carausius there would never have been one.
