Caracalla, Silver Denarius

Caracalla (AD 198-217), silver Denarius, Rome, AD 210-213, ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, laureate head to right, rev. MONETA AVG, Moneta standing to left, holding scales and cornucopiae, 2.91g, 12h (RIC IV 224). Extremely fine.

Although the coin was minted in Rome, the obverse legend ending BRIT celebrated Caracalla's presence in Britain on his father's campaign to extend the empire into Caledonia. Septimius Severus died in York, during the campaign, at which point Caracalla and Geta quickly concluded a peace treaty with the Caledonians and returned to Rome with their father's ashes.
