Capture of Cartagena, 1740.

Admiral Edward Vernon, Capture of Cartagena, Pinchbeck Medal, 1740-41, Vernon standing before the city of Cartagena in Colombia, rev the battle in the harbor, THE FORTS OF CARTHAGENA DESTROYED BY ADM VERNON, 37mm (A&C. Cav 6-G). Struck with flatness to high points on the reverse yet retaining excellent detail, and in fact much as made, for a medal from this somewhat unsophisticated series.

Cartagena was Spain's main colonial gold shipping port, in Nueva Granada (Colombia). The attack itself was the largest single action in the so called "War of Jenkins' Ear".
