Canute Penny, Quatrefoil type, Gloucester, Godric
Canute (1016-35), silver quatrefoil Penny (c.1017-25), Gloucester Mint, Moneyer Godric, diademed and draped bust left within quatrefoil, legend surrounding commences at top, +CNVT REX ANGOR., rev. pellet at centre of voided long cross, over quatrefoil with pellet cusps, legend surrounding, +GOD RIC. ON G LEP., weight 1.12g (Hildebrand 966; N.785; S.1157). Toned a few pecks each side, otherwise good very fine to almost extremely fine, very rare with the diademed bust.
The Latin legends translate as "Canute King of the English" on obverse and on the reverse "Godric of Gloucester."
The diademed bust type is very rare and only seen for the Mints of Bristol, Gloucester and Hereford as well as some known for London.
