Canute Helmet type Penny, Ilchester, Aethelwine Mus
Canute (1016-35), silver pointed helmet Penny (1024-30), Ilchester Mint, Moneyer Alfwine Mus, helmeted bust left with sceptre to bottom edge of coin, legend surrounding commences at top, CNVT R EX ANGL:, rev. pellet at centre of double annulet and voided short cross, pellet in broken annulet in each angle, linear circles and legend surrounding, + ÆL.FPINE MVS ON GIFE, weight 1.15g (Copenhagen 949/950; N.787; S.1158). Toned a pleasing very fine and perhaps the rarest moneyer at Ilchester having a double name and exists only for helmet type of Canute.
The Latin legends translate as "Canute King of the English" on obverse and on the reverse "Alfwine Mus of Ilchester."
