C. Mamilius Limetanus (82 B.C.), Silver Denarius Serratus. Mint of Rome. Draped bust of Mercury facing right, wearing a winged petasus, a caduceus behind his shoulder, A on left, rev. C MAMIL / LIMETAN (TA in monogram), Ulysses standing right, holding a staff and extending his right hand towards his dog Argus, who stands left to greet him, 3.96g., 9h (Crawford 362/1; Sydenham 741; RBW 1370). With a well-centred and complete reverse, light iridescent toning, extremely fine.
The reverse of this coin refers to the scene from Homer's Odyssey where Ulysses returns to his homeland after an absence of twenty years and is instantly recognised by his dog Argus, despite Ulysses being in the guise of a beggar.
