Brazil, Maria I (1786-99), gold Peca of 6,400 Reis, 1796, Rio de Janeiro, bust in decorative headdress right, date and mint letter below, legend and toothed border surrounding, MARIA. I. D. G. PORT. ET. ALG. REGINA., rev. crowned shield of arms within ornate frame, edge engrailed, 14.35g (KM 226.1; Fr. 87). Usual wear on highest points and light surface marks, good very fine with remains of original lustre and a beautiful portrait in the Maria I series.

The mental deterioration of Maria I subsequently lead to her second son Dom Joao Prince of Brazil to be elected as Prince Regent in 1799, Maria death occurring in 1816 aged 81.
