Bombardment of Le Havre, 1694.

The Bombardment of Le Havre, 1694, Silver Medal by Jan Boskam, William right, laureate draped and cuirassed, INVICTISSIMVS GVLIELMVS MAG, rev. brazen bull standing left on flaming platform; in the background a naval attack on the city in flames; SVIS PERIT IGNIBVS AVCTOR, PORTVS. GRATIÆ. EXVSTVS ET. EVERVS. BOMBARD ANGLO. BATAV MDCXCIIII I B F , 60mm (van Loon IV/165; MI ii 97/321; Milford Haven 111; Eimer 357). About extremely fine and very rare.

The imagery likens the French to Philaris, the despot of Akragas, who roasted his victims alive in a hollow bronze bull. Ultimately the people of Sicily rose up against Philaris and roasted him in his own horrific manner.

Provenance:

Ex Jonathan H. Kagan Collection, Triton XVII, 8 January 2014, lot 1539

Ex Morton & Eden, 21 May 2003, lot 1284.
