Augustus (27 BC to AD 14), silver Denarius, Lugdunum, 11-10 BC, [AVGVSTVS] DIVI F, head of Augustus right, rev. IMP XII, to left and right of Diana standing, dog standing left, SICIL, in exergue, 3.88g, 9h (RIC I, 181). Very fine.
Provenance:
CNG Auction 337, 22 October 2014, lot 369 therein stated to be from "Group SGF".
The reverse type recalls the defeat of Sextus Pompey by Agrippa in 36 BC at the Battle of Naulochus. A shrine was dedicated to Diana at Naulochus in recognition of her divine intervention during the battle.
