Anne 1709 E Halfcrown, Edinburgh Mint Scotland, OCTAVO edge year

Anne (1702-14), silver Post-Union Halfcrown, 1709, Edinburgh Mint, E below draped bust left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, ANNA.DEI. GRATIA. rev. Pre-Union crowned cruciform shields, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, .MAG BRI. FR ET. HIB REG. edge inscribed in raised letters, * DECVS* ET* TVTAMEN* ANNO* REGNI* OCTAVO*, weight 14.93g (Bull 1384 R3; ESC 580 R3; S.3605). Toned with striationsof light flan adjustment marks on both sides, otherwise slightly off-centre on obverse, nearly very fine and very rare.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Anne by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland." and additionally on the edge "An ornament and a safeguard, in the eighth year of the reign."

Issued from the only "branch" Mint of the reign, Edinburgh in Scotland which was united with England in 1707. Interestingly the Edinburgh Mint use star stops to space out the edge lettering whereas London use pellet stops and crosses.
