Gold was seemingly in quite short supply in the first pre-Union part of the reign of Queen Anne. The calendar year output for gold in 1707 totalled a mere £27,012 most of which would have been issued after the The Act of Union with Scotland which had begun from the 1st May 1707. The pre-Union guineas were only struck dated 1702, 1705, 1706 and 1707, along with a special limited issue of VIGO guineas struck dated 1703 which were made only from the gold captured from Spain at Vigo Bay in 1702. The pre-Union guineas are all very rare when compared with what comes later as the gold issues climb into six figure sums with the most in 1714 when over half a million pounds worth of gold was struck.
