GRATIA.,rev.crowned emblematic Pre-Union cruciform shields, rose at centre, emblematic sceptres in angles, date either side of top crown, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, .MAG BR.FRA ET.HIB REG., edge, milled, weight 4.17g (Schneider 528; Bull EGC 484 R3; MCE 229; S.3564).Toned with a red hue on obverse but with a patch on reverse, the reverse scuffed in one quarter with scratch marks on lettering and design, otherwise a bold very fine and extremely rare, being the only pre-Union Half-Guinea apart from the Vigo of 1703.

The Latin legends translate as "Anne, by the grace of God," on obverse and on the reverse as "Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

Gold was seemingly in quite short supply in the first pre-Union part of the reign of Queen Anne. The calendar year output for gold in 1705 totalled a mere £4,628 which speaks for itself and may have been mostly Five Guinea pieces and Guineas.
